Colombo runs on Sri Lanka Standard Time (SLST) at UTC+5:30 — five and a half hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. The IANA timezone identifier is Asia/Colombo, covering the entire island. The offset is identical to India Standard Time, so the clock in Colombo always reads the same as in Chennai, Mumbai or Delhi — yet Sri Lanka maintains its own distinct time zone rather than borrowing India's Asia/Kolkata identifier, a reminder that a shared offset and a shared time zone are not quite the same thing.
Sri Lanka's offset has an unusually eventful modern history. In 1996, facing a severe electricity crisis driven by drought at its hydro-power reservoirs, the country moved its clocks forward twice in quick succession — first to UTC+6:30, then adjusted to UTC+6:00 — hoping the extra evening daylight would cut lighting demand. The shifted time proved awkward: it pushed sunrise uncomfortably late, put the island out of alignment with solar time, and created a half-hour split with Indian partners. After a decade of debate, Sri Lanka returned to UTC+5:30 in April 2006, restoring the offset it had shared with India, and it has stayed there ever since.
Sri Lanka does not observe daylight saving time today. SLST holds at UTC+5:30 all year, which makes Colombo predictable to schedule against: it is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of London during GMT and 4 hours 30 minutes during British Summer Time, and 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York during Eastern Standard Time, narrowing to 9 hours 30 minutes during EDT. Within the region, Colombo matches India to the minute, sits 15 minutes behind Kathmandu (UTC+5:45), and 30 minutes behind Dhaka (UTC+6).

It hosts the Colombo Stock Exchange, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, and the head offices of the country's major banks and conglomerates, while the Port of Colombo ranks among the busiest container hubs in South Asia — a key transshipment point on the Europe–East Asia shipping lanes, which makes Colombo time relevant to logistics teams far beyond the island. (The legislative capital is technically Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, on Colombo's outskirts and on the same clock.)
